        Fun Facts about Ghana

        1. First African country to gain independence
        Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule, achieving this milestone on March 6, 1957.

        2. Home of the Kente Cloth
        Kente, the colorful handwoven fabric often worn on special occasions, originated in Ghana and is a symbol of royalty, tradition, and cultural pride.

        3. Named after the ancient Ghana Empire
        Although the modern country of Ghana is not in the same location as the ancient Ghana Empire, it was named in honor of the empire’s legacy of wealth and power.

        4. Lake Volta is the largest man-made lake (surface area) in the world
        Covering over 8,500 square kilometers, Lake Volta plays a major role in hydroelectric power and transportation.

        5. Ghana is home to over 100 ethnic groups
        With more than 80 languages spoken, Ghana is incredibly diverse. Major ethnic groups include the Akan, Mole-Dagbani, Ewe, and Ga-Dangme.

        6. It’s the world’s second-largest producer of cocoa
        Ghana is a major player in the global chocolate industry, second only to Côte d’Ivoire.

        7. ‘Chale’ is more than a word—it’s a vibe!
        “Chale” (pronounced cha-lay) is a common slang in Accra meaning friend, bro, or dude – and is symbolic of Ghana’s friendly, welcoming spirit.
